“What Does Creativity Look Like?” Statewide Public Awareness Campaign Recognizes National Arts and Humanities Month
10/01/2009

Charleston, WV – The Appalachian Education Initiative (AEI), as part of its “What Does Creativity Look Like?” campaign, is recognizing and celebrating National Arts and Humanities Month which was established in 1993 and is celebrated every October in the United States. Initiated to encourage Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and humanities, it has become the nation's largest collective annual celebration of the arts.

National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM) is a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America. Held every October and coordinated by Americans for the Arts, it is the largest annual celebration of the arts and humanities in the nation. From arts center open houses to mayoral proclamations to banners and media coverage, communities across the United States join together to recognize the importance of arts and culture in our daily lives.

“The arts play an essential and unique role in our communities and schools. I encourage everyone to explore the amazing variety of arts activities, opportunities and resources in West Virginia this month,” said Lou Karas, Executive Director of AEI.

National Arts and Humanities Months has four primary goals, including but not limited to the following:
  • To create a national, state and local focus on the arts and humanities through the media.
  • To encourage the active participation of individuals, as well as arts, humanities and other interested organizations nationwide.
  • To provide an opportunity for federal, state and local business, government and civic leaders to declare their support for the arts and humanities.
  • To establish a highly visible vehicle for raising public awareness about the arts and humanities.
