The June Student Artist of the Month is Coty Sheme. Coty is a 2011 graduate of Lincoln High School (Harrison County). He is the son of Jody L. Romeo-Sheme of Shinnston, West Virginia.
Coty was nominated by his art teacher, Carolyn Light who described him as "bright, talented and an extremely hard worker." She commented that Coty " sets goals for himself and works to achieve them."
In school, Coty participated in many activities including singing the National Anthem for basketball games and other events. He was President of the Art Club and a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Leo Club, the International Club and the Lincoln High School Tennis Team. Outside of school, Coty plays piano for his church. He has had artwork displayed on a regular basis at school, at the State Youth Art Month Exhibit in Charleston and as a featured artist at the Harrison County Art Month Exhibit in Clarksburg.
This fall, Coty plans to attend Fairmont State University where he will major in Pre-Med and with a minor in Art.
According to Coty, “For me, art is everything....I believe it is a God-given gift and my own unique way to express how I see things or people. No other person sees things exactly the way I do and that is the beauty of art. It allows me to express a lifetime passion, and I believe anyone can create art with the proper guidelines. I have been fortunate enough to have inspiring mentors, like my art teacher Mrs. Carolyn Light and Mara Wilson, a student teacher. I began painting this year and had never attempted to before. I drew stick people, cartoonish characters, and cars. I applied myself and found out I had a talent for watercolor. “
